The Ngee Ann Kongsi donates $1.2million for NAFA Scholarships

He did not plan to enrol into university because of his family situation. Fortunately, Royson Tan obtained a scholarship which allowed him to continue his studies and move towards his goals. Tan (24) is a first-year student pursing his Bachelor of the Arts (Hons) Design Practice at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA). Completing his Diploma in Design (Furniture and Spatial) at NAFA, he garnered more practical experience and now has a clearer vision for his future. In his interview, Tan revealed that due to his family’s unstable financial situation, he never planned for a degree, and wanted to enter the workforce after obtaining his Diploma. The scholarship has helped ease his financial burdens and allowed him to continue learning more in the field of design. The Ngee Ann Kongsi (NAK) donated $1.2million to set up a scholarship fund in support of NAFA students, who like Tan, are pursuing their Degrees in Fine Art, Design Practice, and Performance Making. The three courses at NAFA are validated by the University of the Arts, London, and will be awarded to a total of 50 Singapore citizens and permanent residents in two- and three-year courses for five academic years. Another scholarship recipient is Sarah Kwek (23), who is pursuing her degree in Fine Arts. Kwek said that NAFA has helped her broaden her horizons, step out of her comfort zone, and develop as an artist. Kwek believes that the scholarship is a springboard to help her achieve her dreams of becoming an art teacher. In his speech, Mr Jamie Teo, Vice-President of NAK and Chairman of the Donation & Charity Sub-Committee, said that NAK is honoured to support NAFA in cultivating the next generation of artists through the scholarship.
